Organic

Organic

Organic began in 1998, while I was living in my apartment on Broadway, here in Seattle.

The underlying image is one scan of my face, which I moved around while the scanner was capturing the image. What resulted was a greatly distorted self-portrait. It reminded me of the “feeling of being organic.” The kind of feeling that is all warmth and movement, and the experience of feeling “morphed.”

I printed this using a high-res stochastic printer and mounted it on the standard clayboard 8×8. Over this I applied a combination of matte and gloss acrylic medium. I wanted to distress the overlaying layer, though, so hit the drying acrylic with a high-temprature heat gun, and forced parts of it to dry too quickly causing both crazing and this interesting foamy effect.
