Painting Interview

In November of 2006, I was interviewed by two students from Seattle Central Community College, for a project they were doing.

The gist of our project will be an interview with you (about your work, your personal journey, and how you communicate through your work) and photographs telling that story. We have some obstructions that have been placed upon us (for example, we have to shoot film and digital, are limited to only 24 analog images, and choose 8 images from those which we must use in our presentation). We have mapped out a shot list, and I’m hoping to interview and shoot some time next week. We are really flexible, so what ever night works for you will be fine for us. … We will be presenting our project to our class (roughly 100 or so media students) so this is a great chance for people to get to know you and your work. I’m really excited about working with you, and really appreciate your willingness to participate!

Here’s a little of what I sent them for background:

My paintings are generally considered in the school of Abstract Expressionism.  They’re essentially emotional outbursts which I’ve tried to focus around a theme.  The three hanging in my space are in a series of Heroes.  Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the beat poet; William S. Burroughs, the Beat writer; and Matthew Barney, the contemporary performance artist.  We can discuss each piece in as much detail as you’d care to when we meet.  Just thought I’d give you a couple points for research.

The big red painting is entitled “Endrometry.”  My mother died of complications from cancer last year, and this is the latest in a series dedicated to that.  It’s for sale, as I’d personally like to stop looking at it, but the price is a bit high as profits go to The American Cancer Society.

Here are some of the photos.
