Designing With Microformats

With the recent re-boot of MIX Online, one of the new features was the publishing of comprehensive articles centered around a particular subject.  For launch, the first subject we tackled was the technology of microformats.  We were fortunate to get John Allsopp to write the first article, basically introducing the concept of Microformats.  John Allsopp literally wrote the book on microformats.

I’m a software engineer, speaker, writer, educator and surf lifesaver, with a long standing interest in CSS, web design and development. I’m also one of the founders and organizers of the web design and development conferences “Web Directions“.

In addition to Allsopp’s great article, I wrote an article centered around designing with microformats, specifically regarding a new prototype the MIX Online team released.

What if there was a way to recognize information common among webpages as something specific (like an event or contact)? What could we *do* with this info? How could we take this data and make it useful and easy to work with? Enter microformats. With a keen eye toward UX, the MIX Online team created the Oomph: A Microformat Toolkit to help the creation, style, and consumption of common types of data found on the web.

I hope you like the article, and I welcome comments through the MIX Online website.  Check it out!
