MIX10 Registration Opens

For the fourth year in a row I have the opportunity to be on the team behind the Microsoft MIX conference.  This year the conference will be held in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay in March, 2010.  We’re going to be doing some amazing things and I welcome your suggestions on how to make this [...]

PDC09

I am fortunate to be on the Microsoft team that hosts and develops the Microsoft PDC, Professional Developers Conference. The PDC conferences are the “premiere developer conference,” in the eyes of the community and brings thousands of attendees from all over the world. I was in the role of Creative Director for the [...]

Opinion: Who gives a “gosh-darn”?

I published a new Opinion on MIX Online today, dealing with community-generated content, and some of the unforeseen pitfalls of dealing with it.
Broadcasting an audience’s live, unfiltered feedback is compelling and useful, but it also presents some challenges, most of which revolve around profanity, search results, and spam.
But what about [...]

Opinion: Styleguides for web vs. events

If you’ve ever created a styleguide that has to work for both web and print, you probably know how challenging it can be—print and web are very different mediums, with very different restrictions. When you create a styleguide that works for both, you do double duty.

Finally, here’s the final Juice flier

So, there was a problem with using images of the Iranian election protests, as one of the charities that Juice was planning on supporting with the proceeds from the evening had to back out at the last minute. The Iranian American Community Alliance is still featured as a benefeciary of the evening, but, honestly, I’m [...]

Another Rejected Flier

So, I’m still working on the latest Juice flier.  DJ Rythma likes this one better than the last, but still has revisions …

Rejected

I have a friend, DJ Rythma, who I make posters for every once-in-a-while.  He runs a night of music called Juice, to raise money for charities.  Rythma’s a super-smart guy, and fun to work with.  However, my most-recent flier was rejected.  Back to the drawing-board.

MIX Online: Designing the pdc09 Experience

I’ve posted a new Opinion to MIX Online.  This one speaks to the design considerations when designing out the PDC09 experience.

Throughout the lead-up and through the conference itself, I’ll try and provide insights into “the sausage-making” of an event like this, specifically geared toward the designers

New opinion: card sorting

During the initial exercise in working out the I.A. for the PDC09 site, we used the process of “card sorting.” It had been a while since I had gone through that exercise, and remembered how very useful it can be.

Students at MIX09

The MIX09 team had the opportunity to invite 200 students from design programs in various colleges around the country.
Eight design students from the University of Cincinnati’s internationally ranked School of Design, part of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), obtained a rare, first-hand look at potential innovations that could radically change the [...]

MIX09 Blog Bling

Along with desktops, poster downloads, and logos, the MIX09 team has released the Blog Bling for MIX09, and hope you’ll add it to your site with a link to http://2009.visitmix.com.  We look forward to seeing you at the conference!

My Time at The Future of Web Design

Future of Web Design
November 3&4, 2008
New York

The Future of Web Design conference is in its second year and has a solid following.  Armed with engaging and influential speakers, the conference seeks to provide guidance and inspiration to the audience (maybe 1000 people?) to which they speak.  I attended this conference, held in New York, November [...]

PDC2008 Recap

I think it was interesting being the only designer in a sea of hardcore developers. In fact, some of the devs I spoke with were really surprised that Microsoft had people like me — Designers, people who care passionately about User Experience — actually worked here. The impression many had was we were 100% developer-focused, [...]

Oomph on DelicateGenius

Delicate Genius interviews Karstenj and Tim Aidlin on Oomph and Microformats

I’m going to The PDC

What:
Microsoft Professional Developers ConferenceSince 1991, the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) has been Microsoft’s premier gathering of leading-edge developers and architects. Attend the PDC to understand the future of the Microsoft platform and to exchange ideas with fellow professionals. You’ll learn about upcoming products, meet Microsoft’s leaders and top engineers, write some code, and be inspired! [...]

REMIX08: Norway

It’s already been a little while, but I thought I’d post the photos I took while in Norway, giving a session at the Norwegian Developers Conference in Oslo.
I used Expression Media 2 to generate the image gallery, using the “Make HTML Gallery” function and their “Ruby” template.  It was super-easy to generate the gallery, and [...]

JUICE Flier

I thought I’d post the latest flier I did for JUICE, a night of music benefitting globally-focused charities.

REMIX08 Australia Recap

I wanted to post a link over to DelicateGenius’s blog post regarding the REMIX08 Australia wrap-up. It gives a decent overview of the event, and might provide some enthusiasm for any Aussies reading this to attend.

REMIX08 Australia, Days 1-4

Tim Aidlin, Design Evangelist, writes about his experience as a featured speaker at REMIX08 Australia

REMIX08 Australia (Days 5-7)

I travelled to Melbourne and checked into my hotel the next day, after stopping by the event-site.  Melbourne was much colder than Sydney, and I was a bit ill-prepared for it in the evening.  I met up with the rest of the speakers and we ate.
I arrived at Town Hall in time for the keynote.  [...]

MIX Bags Get a Little Press

This kind blogger mentions liking the bags at MIX08 that I designed.  Just thought I’d post some shameless self-promotion
On a side note: The bags that usually are given away at conferences are super ugly. But whoever did the Mix08 bags did a great job. I’m actually going to use mine!

Mix 08: Silverlight Sessions [...]

Cirque de Soleil WPF & Silverlight

In addition to taking on the Creative Director role for the MIX08 conference, I worked in a team of 6 to develop the WPF and Silverlight applications they demonstrate during the Cirque de Soleil part of the Day 1 Keynote address. Check it out.
I *wish* that dialogue box hadn’t been open at the very beginning, [...]

MIX08 Event Site

Using strict CSS and symantic HMTL, I created the MIX08 Conference site (shown) and Blog site, both of which were pushed live in November of 2008.
Designed in Microsoft Expression Blend, a Silverlight module was included on the homepage, as well, which led to registration.
Now in its third year, MIX is an intimate opportunity for cutting-edge [...]
