MIX10K Contest Opens Today

Now in its second year, the MIX team and conference brings the MIX10K contest to the community.  It’s a simple contest designed to maximize creativity within strictly confined boundaries.  In this case, the boundaries are file-size: namely, 10K.  As well, the application must be built using of Silverlight, Gestalt or HTML5.

MIX10 Registration Opens

For the fourth year in a row I have the opportunity to be on the team behind the Microsoft MIX conference.  This year the conference will be held in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay in March, 2010.  We’re going to be doing some amazing things and I welcome your suggestions on how to make this [...]

Flotzam: screencast of the week

Betsy Weber just published a nice blog-post regarding Flotzam, the WPF application Karsten Januszewski and I (with some great help from Hans Hugli) developed and have been running at the MIX and PDC conferences for the last 3 years.  Check it out!

Students at MIX09

The MIX09 team had the opportunity to invite 200 students from design programs in various colleges around the country.
Eight design students from the University of Cincinnati’s internationally ranked School of Design, part of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), obtained a rare, first-hand look at potential innovations that could radically change the [...]

Nice things from zdnet

I thought this write up about the online experience for MIX09 was particularly flattering.

Microsoft are doing a terrific job of demonstrating how to run a conference with their Mix09 conference …
A live feed of keynote content – speakers and what appears on the projection screens – is right there on the front page along [...]

Interview on Channel9

This interview’s been up for a little while, but thought I’d at least get an archive of it as a reference point for later.  I thought it was a good interview revolving around the developer/designer workflow and what I thought would be good design-oriented sessions at MIX09

Tim Aidlin, is a User Experience (aka "UX") [...]

Countdown to MIX09: Design Matters!

I was recently asked to sit down with some of my friends here at Microsoft and discuss the thinking behind the MIX09 Conference aesthetic and message.

This week we invite Tim Aidlin, the creative director of MIX09, to tell us about the design philosophy behind the MIX creative.  We know if we’re going to hold a [...]

Oomph Added to MIX09 Site

We’ve added the Oomph Microformats Toolkit to the MIX09 conference site, to help users and conference goers.  With the addition of Oomph, users can now directly export conference and speaker information to Outlook, Yahoo!, and many other service providers.
Before triggering Oomph:

After triggering Oomph, you see the overlay displaying the event and speaker information:

MIX09 Blog Bling

Along with desktops, poster downloads, and logos, the MIX09 team has released the Blog Bling for MIX09, and hope you’ll add it to your site with a link to http://2009.visitmix.com.  We look forward to seeing you at the conference!

<3 your "8-bit love format"

Thanks to Sean at Idea Kitchen for the great write up on MIX Online and the MIX09 Conference site.

I really like the new format, with labs being the playground for code.  And from the look of it it looks like they will be updated with fresh content.  They’ve started off with Oomph, a lab [...]

MIX09 | <3 Your Web

Today we launched the MIX09 Conference site.  Our goal is to connect with designers, developers and web-technology enthusiasts to share knowledge and create community around “The Next Web Now.”
“There’s something different in the air at MIX09. Some might call it love – love of the interaction between designers and developers; love of inspiration and innovation [...]

REMIX08: Norway

It’s already been a little while, but I thought I’d post the photos I took while in Norway, giving a session at the Norwegian Developers Conference in Oslo.
I used Expression Media 2 to generate the image gallery, using the “Make HTML Gallery” function and their “Ruby” template.  It was super-easy to generate the gallery, and [...]

REMIX08 Australia Recap

I wanted to post a link over to DelicateGenius’s blog post regarding the REMIX08 Australia wrap-up. It gives a decent overview of the event, and might provide some enthusiasm for any Aussies reading this to attend.

REMIX08 Australia, Days 1-4

Tim Aidlin, Design Evangelist, writes about his experience as a featured speaker at REMIX08 Australia

REMIX08 Australia (Days 5-7)

I travelled to Melbourne and checked into my hotel the next day, after stopping by the event-site.  Melbourne was much colder than Sydney, and I was a bit ill-prepared for it in the evening.  I met up with the rest of the speakers and we ate.
I arrived at Town Hall in time for the keynote.  [...]

MIX Bags Get a Little Press

This kind blogger mentions liking the bags at MIX08 that I designed.  Just thought I’d post some shameless self-promotion
On a side note: The bags that usually are given away at conferences are super ugly. But whoever did the Mix08 bags did a great job. I’m actually going to use mine!

Mix 08: Silverlight Sessions [...]

Cirque de Soleil WPF & Silverlight

In addition to taking on the Creative Director role for the MIX08 conference, I worked in a team of 6 to develop the WPF and Silverlight applications they demonstrate during the Cirque de Soleil part of the Day 1 Keynote address. Check it out.
I *wish* that dialogue box hadn’t been open at the very beginning, [...]

MIX08 Event Site

Using strict CSS and symantic HMTL, I created the MIX08 Conference site (shown) and Blog site, both of which were pushed live in November of 2008.
Designed in Microsoft Expression Blend, a Silverlight module was included on the homepage, as well, which led to registration.
Now in its third year, MIX is an intimate opportunity for cutting-edge [...]

MIX07 "The Goods" CDs

We received the first of the cds that I designed which we will be distributing at MIX07.  Lots of good stuff on these …

Keep It Simple, Stupid! | Smashing Magazine

The Mix07 site that I designed has been picked up as one of the top 50 sites of 2006 designed using CSS. Yay for me.

Starting MIX07

One of the projects I’ve been working on here at Microsoft in the Developer & Platform Evangelism group is gearing up for Mix 07 a conference focusing on next-generation web technologies, held in Las Vegas.
One of my responsibilities, along with designing a few of the demos to be shown at the conference, was to work [...]

MY Time At MIX06

Tami and I got back from Las Vegas today, and are crashing out, catching up on television recorded over the week with the DVR. We were in Las Vegas Sunday through today, staying at The MGM Grand Hotel. I was attending a Microsoft-Sponsored conference, Mix06 at The Venetian Hotel.
Sunday We left [...]
